FOOD for Thought

I've been pondering this subject loosely for months, but intensely for about 36 hours now & I've decided I need to revamp my family's eating habits.

Here are my issuses...one, I'm addicted to Diet Coke, and although I actually kind of like the addiction, I realize it probably isn't worth bragging about & needs to change. Second, two of Zack's favorite foods are pizza & Tyson's chicken nuggets, not my idea of healthy. Third, it seems more & more of the things we eat come from boxes, bags or a container of some sort -- it leaves me wondering, what the heck is in the stuff.

So, I've started reading labels, and to be perfectly honest, I wasn't really happy with what I was reading. It mostly centers on snack type food for Zack. Nutri-Grain bars, graham crackers, granola bars, etc. It seems they are all just full of some form of sugar, which just kind of bugs me.

I've known this change has needed to occur for quite some time, but I haven't wanted to face it. You know why? It means I am going to have to stop working & start cooking! ugh.

But back to basics is where we are headed. Fruits, veggies & whole grains. I don't want anymore overly processed food, but I don't want to be an over the top crazy about it. Sometimes it is great to eat a hot dog at a baseball game. I'm not about to skip that stuff, but for the vast majority of things, I am going to choose differently. If the label has something I can't pronounce, I'm not buying it. The kicker is going to be breakfast...I'm a sucker for Frosted Flakes! Any ideas for this meal?

I'm giving myself until September 1st to give up my Diet Coke (it really is a summer time thing for me) & to re-learn my shopping & eating habits gradually. We are headed back to basics...care to join us???

Good luck with the no Diet Coke thing! My habits stink too. My brother in law told me I should try to eat things that actually grew in the ground or that were once breathing. I am pretty sure that rules out Frosted Flakes.

That is the way I grew up and have mostly raised my family--eating healthy foods. If you want ideas check in with Beth. She is the queen of nutrition and can help with snack ideas and meal planning. Good luck! And good for you!

Good luck with the eating habits! So was I not suppose to see your Sonic drink with you this morning? If you want my 2 cents, I don't try to "cut out" foods, but "add in" the good ones. For instance, don't say goodbye to Frosted Flakes, just add other healthy stuff with it. Bowl of fruit, some eggs, or only eat F.F. every other day. Hey, thanks for your help this morning. I'm at my mom's now, and can't change too much without my pics at home....but I did change some things. Let me know what you think. Check you email first!

it is tough but i think the summer months are the best to try it out and change the habits. it is impossible not to eat and love all of the fresh fruits and veggies that are available during the up coming months. good luck and of course indulge in that ballpark hot dog!

ditch the diet coke now! there isn't one redeeming quality about it, really! it's artificial all the way, you can totally kick it and replace it with another beveridge that might be good for you... water perhaps?? I'll be your sponsor...Call me when you melt down!

Amy - I too have had these thoughts. Luckily, I have discovered Trader Joe's. Everything in the place is so healthy, usually organic, and GOOD! The best thing: the stuff doesn't cost much more than at regular grocery stores. My current favorite is non-fat vanilla yogurt with fresh berries (if you call thawed frozen berries fresh)added for breakfast. Also, their pineapple salsa is amazing, as well as their honey whole-wheat pretzel sticks (maybe zach would like those??). It's a fun store to just wander and FIND stuff. good luck!

P.S. If you kick the diet coke, you will save on your dental bills. There are very few things that are worse for your teeth than sipping a DC over a few hours. Just food for thought from the dental police. :):)

diet coke is not that hard to kick!~ come on you can do it! i've done it twice...cold turkey! once for fertility treatments and now I don't drink it due to the I.C.
I only have it once in a blue moon for a treat. Once you do it you won't notice it being gone. Start drinking water! As far as breakfast goes, the hardest meal of the day for me!

Amy, one trick that I have learned is to drink water and only water with every meal! Breakfast is a little hard, but I have replaced soda, juice, milk, etc. with water at the table. It really made a difference for me! : )

I completely agree that there are way to many processed food choices. Thank goodness for the summer months and all the fresh produce! Oh and Trevor loved your comment about the Suns.
