This morning I attended our stake's adult institute class. I kind of surprised myself by being there and being prepared. I made arrangements for Zack (Thanks Jules) & managed to make it there only a few minutes late. I'm glad I got there.
The class manual is going to be the book "Preach My Gospel" and the teacher is a guy in our ward that was just released from serving as President of the Brazil Mission Training Center. I think that is cool. He's had lots of different callings & experiences & I'm excited to learn from him.
Today we familiarized ourselves with the book "Preach My Gospel." It is an amazing book & has me wondering where I've been the last couple years as I was completely clueless. Oh yeah...it probably has something to do with a man named Z.
I thought this book was just for the missionaries...but in reality it is for all of us. So if you haven't flipped through it yet...go out & get yourself one. $6 at the Distribution Center, $9 at Deseret Book...take your pick.
Here are a few of the chapters we will be studying...
How Do I Recognize & Understand the Spirit
How Do I Develop Christlike Attributes
How Do I Use Time Wisely
How Can I Improve My Teaching Skills
The list goes on & it is easy to see why this book isn't just for missionaries!
One thing I learned today, that again has me wondering where I've been, is about a Study Journal. I think we all remember President Eyring's talk (which is one of my favorites!) regarding the Gratitude Journal -- I think I've been mixing these up & confusing the 2. A Study Journal is a book, notebook, binder (whatever works for you) where you take notes & record impressions during your study. So during scripture study, sacrament meeting, General Conference, Relief Society, you'd always have it with you. I've done a form of this several times, but assigning a name to it makes me feel all warm & fuzzy.
One point we discussed regarding this Study Journal was that while it is important to get the concepts the speaker is teaching, it is more important to listen to what the Holy Ghost is teaching you. I sometimes get a little obsessive compulsive about things & won't want to write down what impressions I'm having because it will interrupt the flow of my journaling & then what if it is mixed in with other stuff & I really wanted it on a separate page & on & on it goes. I've decided I've got to get over that & just do it. The other thing I have to get over is creating the "perfect" study journal. Seriously, at the mention of study journal, I was envisioning myself walking the aisles of Target (without Z's distractions) in order to find the "perfect" study journal. Again, I'm getting over it. I've got several already from a couple years back...I picking one & moving forward.
Back to the study journal...Elder Scott has said, "Knowledge carefully recorded is knowledge available in a time of need. Spiritually sensitive information should be kept in a sacred place that communicates to the Lord how you treasure it. This practice enhances the likelihood of your receiving further light."
Today's Goal: Get a study journal (from my bookshelf, not Target).

this is super exciting amy! i'm looking forward to you sharing your insights as you go through this stuff.
Hey Amy! I am so glad that I found your blog. I am fairly new to the blogging world, so I am finding more and more friends all the time. I found yours from Emily (Grow)'s blog. I really enjoyed your "Preach My Gospel" post. I actually just started a "study journal" myself recently and it has been really cool to reflect on my thoughts and feelings, not just on what I'm reading. So, thank you for your insight, and I look forward to seeing more of you and your family on your blog!
I like the idea of a study journal. I always wanted to do that but with a child on my lap for the past seven years its been pretty hard. I guess I should do it when I can. Thanks for the suggestion.
I like the Preach My Gospel book. At one time I studied in the "Christ-like Attributes" section. But sadly, that's all I can say I've ever done. Maybe I should dust it off and crack it open. . .
